Losing game
Color, 4:3 format
Two senior police officers trying to calm down a young man with a knife in De Waterkant, one of the hippest suburbs of top 20 world travel destination Cape Town, South Africa.
The man, who had threatened passersby with his knife minutes before, was convinced by the two officers to stop his threatening action and put his knife in his pocket, I repeat: in his pocket. After he had agreed to do so, the two officers just let him walk away. They let him walk away with his knife in his pocket. The three patrol cars that had meanwhile arrived at the scene also left.
Scenes like that can be seen in many South African cities nearly every day.
While local media have called the fight against crime a losing game, many international observers and journalists have concluded that South African police and the ruling ANC just tend to cover up the threat ordinary citizens and visitors have to face every day, in order to not lose the lucrative income from tourism.
